Delayed callback is where the real measurement happens
The Reading Recall Examination has two phases: immediate recall after the passage blackout, and a delayed callback later in the Diagnostic. Most Fellows focus on the first phase. The second phase is where the measurement science lives.
Delayed callback tests consolidation — whether the information moved from working memory to longer-term storage. If you score well on immediate recall and poorly on callback, your encoding strategy is shallow.
What improved my callback scores:
- Reading for structure, not details. During the passage, I identify the argument structure — thesis, evidence, counterpoint, conclusion. Details fade; structure persists.
- One sentence summary after each paragraph. Internal, not written. Forces synthesis.
- Physical books daily. The institution recommends this. It trains the same faculty.
